N° 02 The house Gloucestershire

Built for sixteen people who want to be together, and occasionally alone.

Tormead House is a period family home on seven acres, air conditioned through the ground floor, with the bedrooms spread across it rather than stacked along one corridor, so couples, grandparents and teenagers each get a part that feels like theirs.

Tormead House seen from the garden: a Cotswold stone house with three gables and stone mullioned windows, behind clipped box hedging and a flagstone path.

Sleeping

Six bedrooms, nine beds and three and a half bathrooms, for up to sixteen guests. Cots and extra beds by arrangement.

Kitchen

One big kitchen built to be cooked in by several people at once, with a dining table that seats everyone without a second sitting.

Sitting rooms

Three reception rooms, deliberately. Somewhere for the film, somewhere for the conversation that is not about the film, and somewhere quiet.

Air conditioning

Through the whole ground floor and three of the bedrooms. Rare in a Cotswold house of this age, and the reason August is comfortable rather than endured.

Working

Full-fibre broadband and a quiet room with a door, for the mornings that cannot quite be given up.

Someone on hand

A manager lives on the premises. Beds made and fires laid before you arrive, and a person to ask for the rest of the week.

Gym and bar

A private gym, and a proper bar with glassware and ice. Both open whenever you are.

Outside

Terrace for long lunches, lawn for games, and a fire pit for the part of the evening nobody wants to end.

In their words

Five things guests say that we would rather not say ourselves.

Having air conditioning in three bedrooms as well as the living room was an absolute lifesaver during the summer months and is something that’s very rare to find in houses.

The pool was the highlight of our holiday. Our whole family spent hours enjoying it every day, and it made our trip so special.

His home was wonderfully air-conditioned — a welcome relief from the recent UK heat — and every morning he greeted us with a bright smile that made us feel right at home.

We had an absolutely fantastic time for my wife’s 30th birthday … everything we could ask for in such a picturesque part of the UK.
